Zone X Wild 2017-18 Fees - A Short Explanation

2017-05-04

Where do your Registration fees go?

Information regarding Registration Fees

Every year a very good question is asked – where do our registration fees go? I've always been big on transparency. While I won't go into exquisite detail, I am going to give an example of how we set our fees currently. It should be noted our fees are within 5% of every other Zone as mandated by SMHA, and should also be noted that it is a strong possibility within the next few years that our fees will be uniform across Saskatoon, set centrally

I will use Bantam hockey as an example.

Bantam A hockey costs us $12,378 to field a team – this is what we must pay SMHA for each Bantam A team to cover their costs of providing ice, refs, insurance, etc.

If we simply divide this by 17 players (9 forwards 6 defence 2 goalies, the max we want to field per team) we would arrive at a player fee of $728, a far cry from 970.

However, the zone has fees every year which we must also consider:
  • Tryout ice – expected to have players for 4 teams, 4 ice times per team = 8 ice times @ $350/hr ice + $100/hr evaluators = $3,600, divided by 4 teams = $900/team.
  • Pre-season ice - 2 ice times/team provided by the zone prior to SMHA providing ice = $350/hr ea = $700/team.
  • Jerseys – replaced every 5 years – cost roughly $3,300/full home and away set = team share of cost for future jerseys 3300/5=$660 - this is set aside to replace jerseys in the future.
  • Equipment – $6,000/yr for the zone for pucks, coach equipment, goalie equipment = 6000/35 teams = $160/team roughly.
I'm not even mentioning the losses due to bank fees, subsidizing the goalie school for younger players and providing goal lessons for older players, etc.

So just considering those fees the cost would be: 12,378+900+700+660+160 = $14,798
  • If a full team fees would be = $14,798/17= $870.50, still well below $970.
  • but the minimum number of players we would field a bantam team with is 14 – so the breakdown would be 9f/4d/1g which works out to 14*870.5=12187 = – $2,610 for ONE TEAM!
If we ran into a situation where half of our teams fielded the minimum while half fielded the maximum, we would run an operating loss likely in the range of $25,000!

To prevent this, we budget based on semi-full teams = $14,798/15 players = $986/player, which is higher than where we pegged the actual cost per player.

Bantam B and C are a little cheaper, so we combine all of the potential fees and come out with an average for all players in bantam which this year was $970.

So if we field average size teams with the odd low number and odd high number one, we should come out to a balanced budget.

While this example was for our most expensive age group, all other age groups are decided in the same manner. It is always our goal to run as efficiently as we can.
